An ode to flip flops

One of my favorite things about summer is spending as much time as possible in flip flops. If I had my way I’d be bare footed at all times, but clearly that’s not a viable option so I opt for the next best thing.

My most favorite pair of flip flops came to a tragic end in Spain. I bravely decided to go and paddle in the sea in Torremolinos and left my pink beauties innocently on the shore. Next thing I know I’ve been knocked flat by a wave taller than me and my flip flops had been dragged far, far away from my feet.
They were hastily replaced by a cheap imitation from a nearby beach shop (thanks Ellie!) as bare foot in 36 degree heat burns. That pair just about lasted the remaining ten days of the holiday but were binned before we hit the airport so now I’m left looking for the perfect replacement.

One brand that has quickly captured my heart is Reef. They have been on my radar silently in the background since my surfer-chic teenage days. Days where anything above a fiver was too expensive for footwear. Now I’m in a better position and want to treat my feet to something a bit more special, especially as flip flops are oddly supportive of a fractured foot.

One of my favorite things about summer is spending as much time as possible in flip flops. If I had my way I’d be bare footed at all times, but clearly that’s not a viable option so I opt for the next best thing.

I love the sturdy but bohemian nature of the Gypsyfree sandal(above). They look really comfortable and a more grown up version to my favored foam soles although perhaps not as versatile as to where I could wear them.

A more versatile option would be the Reef Playa Dreams(above). The sole remains more in keeping with the traditional flip flop whilst the thong part updates the shoe and gives it a slightly dressier edge.

Of course indecision reigns supreme here and I’m torn between replacing my lost at sea pair with something of the same style or opting for something a bit different and a bit less traditional. Part of me feels flip flops should be kept as such and therefore a foam based style would be what I go for, but where I live I’m hardly going to be trekking over beaches, paddling in the sea or slipping them on after surfing. The worst they’d encounter is some slightly muddy grass after a downpour and that has me thinking that maybe investing in leather might be worth it.

Where do you stand on flip flops? Are you a traditionalist or do you like to branch out? Got any amusing flip flop fails to share with me?

Not a Brat

Tee: c/o Brat & Suzie at ASOS
Jeans: Oasis
Trainers: Converse
I’m a big fan of Brat & Suzie’s cute and creative designs so when I was offered one of their latest designs, available at ASOS now I was only too happy to accept.
I had grand notions of being able to style this up in some creative way, but in the end my brain (and lacking wardrobe) failed me and I opted for standard skinny jeans and hi-tops. I suppose for me, this is creative. From the girl who used to tremble at the mention of jeans and trousers this is still a small step out of my comfort zone.
I’m so behind on outfit photos so there will probably be a bit of an onslaught in the next week or so, alongside some other much overdue posts.
I’m still trying to get back in to a post-holiday routine and getting some ideas together of how to stop this blog being so damn mediocre.

Channel 4 Need You!

Everyone loves a bit of fashion TV right? Everyone has dreams of being on TV, right?
That’s why I’m helping to spread the word about a quite frankly brilliant sounding new show from Channel 4.
Channel 4 are making a BRAND NEW fashion show hosted
by Dawn O’Porter and we are looking for people from all
over the UK to take part.
Do you live and breathe designer/high-street clothes and
wouldn’t be seen dead in vintage or second hand clothing?
Are you a high street shopaholic?  Do you have all the clothes
but nothing to wear?
This Old Thing  will celebrate vintage fashion, show how to repair and revive clothing to bring it up to date, and hope to cure the country’s addiction to fast fashion – one wardrobe at a time.   Dawn sets out to prove that classic clothes from the past can be the way forward.
Each week Dawn will take on a vintage fashion virgin and introduce them to the alternative world of fashion.
Channel 4 are looking for fashion fans nationwide to apply to take part in the show,
if this sounds like you then you simply need to contact
ASAP.
Maybe I’ll see one of you lovely lot on the small screen soon.

The Grand Finale

The best days are those that start off looking as if they might be exactly the opposite.
That’s what happened on the penultimate day of our Spanish adventure when both Ellie and I woke up (thanks to a drunken lad imitating an alarm clock) slightly grumpy and not in the mood to do anything much at all until our planned activity of Parasailing in the late afternoon.
By mid-morning we were both a little restless and a lot cheerier so decided that actually we’d jump on a train and re-visit Fuengirola; a mere 16 minute journey from where we were staying and see if we could find what all the fuss was about (turns out we were un-impressed last year because we went completely the wrong way out of the train station and got somewhat lost for hours).
From the moment we headed the correct way out of the station the day improved vastly. First up was lunch. We both wanted something plain and simple and whilst wandering around in search of a sandwich were directed to a newly taken over cafe/bar. We previously had ignored all invitations to check various places out but something about this one made us visit and we left with happy stomachs AND happy wallets.

After lunch we took a wander through the tourist shops (can’t get enough of them!) and along the front by the port. Our parasailing was booked for 5pm so having found a shaded spot for me and a sunny spot for Ellie we settled ourselves down for a blissful few hours on one of the nicest beaches ever. Even the sea was on my side. I was somewhat fearful after the vicious wave in Torremolinos but a paddle in the tepid water soon got me back in the swing of things.
taking it easy

I’ll leave our parasailing adventures to speak for themselves via the photos but if you are ever in the area I highly recommend booking with Pirate Parasailing. For 40 euros each we had an hour and a half boat trip and a good ten minutes up in the air. I can’t explain what it felt like to be up there…so peaceful and surreal. You could see for miles and miles and everything slowed down.
The instructors were fantastic too, such a hilarious duo but at the same time excellent at what they do- those guys know their stuff.

about to get properly dunked

We were on such a high after that experience and headed straight off to get a cooling fro-yo just too add some sugar to that high.
(White chocolate on fro-yo is divine, just for information!)
We headed back to the hotel to find a wonderful invitation waiting for us.
Our friend from last year, Rami (the hotel owner’s brother) had managed to get the restaurant he was planning last year open in time for our final night!
It was invite only and we soon dressed up and headed on down to Blankko
The photos we took just can’t do it justice. There are some incredible ones on the facebook page too but still, you just have to go there.

The food was hands down the best I’ve ever eaten. So beautifully prepared, presented and served. We both had fish dishes but there was meat and surprisingly vegetarian options too (rare in Spain). We got to sample a couple of the starters which were out of this world, as were the desserts we ordered.
The best part?
2 mains, 2 desserts and 4 drinks came to 40 euros.
Fine dining experience at bog standard prices.
Amazing.
Our friend did us proud and I wish him and his team nothing but success for their new venture. I’d pay to go for the views alone, and it is also the perfect place to go during the day for a coffee and reading session.
We went to bed that night so happy and full of life.
It was the perfect ending to THE most perfect holiday. Ellie makes for the best travel buddy ever; languages teachers tend to have that talent.
(and we spent our last day roasting on the beach before a final drink at Blankko and dragging ourselves to Malaga airport)
The End.
What is your most perfect holiday memory?

Summer Spectacle with TOMS

I appear to have developed a bit of an obsession with sunglasses this summer, so when I was sent over this press release from TOMS I just knew I had to share.

TOMS have collaborated with the amazing interiors designer Jonathan Adler and have created the below amazing Unisex eyewear – with hand embroided cases.
The three styles have had an all-American make over and are available to buy this week on the TOMS website.
They range from £105- £130 and as with all of the TOMS product this range also supports the One-for- One message, that for every pair of glasses bought, TOMS provides life changing eye surgery, prescription glasses or medical treatment for someone in need in over 50 countries.
I love the work that TOMS do to help those in need. I never hesitate about making a purchase from this brand- my footwear collection will attest to that. Sadly my budget doesn’t currently stretch to a pair of these, but I have been lucky enough to own a pair of TOMS sunglasses from when they first launched and I can hand on heart say they are worth every penny.
The real selling point of this collaboration is those stunning needlepoint cases. Oh how I wish I could sew!
