Degustabox February 2021*

Box gifted by Degustabox
This is a PR box, this means there will sometimes be additional flavours or products than you’d get as a subscriber, I will highlight this within my post.

After the success of the January box, I did wonder if the February 2021 Degustabox would be able to reach the same level of success. In actual fact, I think it surpassed the first box of the year, with a theme of home comforts I really don’t think there was a single product in here that hasn’t been enjoyed by either Bob or myself over the last few weeks. Read on to find out our collaborative thoughts.

Before I became obsessed with almond milk, I went through a phase of only using Koko original milk in my porridge or cereal. I’m not vegan, but I hate the taste of cow’s milk so I always look for a plant based alternative. Getting a carton of this in this month’s Degustabox reminded me of how much I love the Koko original- it’s light and fresh and a little bit sweet. I’m definitely going to switch things up a bit and buy more of this. Available in all major supermarkets and independent health food stores for £1.50.

I’ve been a long time purchaser of BelVita breakfast biscuits, ever since they first launched in 2010; they are so handy for breakfast and snacking on the go, but I’ve never really taken the time to explore the other products in the range. The soft bakes are really rather nice, it’s hard to explain the texture, somewhere between and biscuit and a cake. They are also quite crumbly and not as sweet as you might think and certainly a lot more substantial than they look. These are something I’ll pick up again for sure, I preferred the chocolate flavour over the blueberry (surprise!) but at 60p per single bar I’d happily grab any flavour for an on the go snack. Available in most grocery stores.

On a weekday I always make Bob some toast before he goes to work (pretty sure this is why he’s marrying me!) and his topping of choice is nearly always jam. There’s a reason Hartley’s is the UK’s No. 1 jam; it’s fruity, it’s delicious and on white bread with melted butter makes for the ultimate comfort food.
When he’s not in the mood for jam Bob will sometimes have honey. He really liked this little pots of Hilltop Blossom Honey which will also be perfect for us to take camping with us over the summery- is there anything better than campfire toast?
The jam is £1.59 and widely available in all major supermarkets. The honey is 75p and again, widely available.

Growing up Pot Noodles were a rare treat and something I always coveted. It’s been years since I last had one and I’ve kind of lost track of the brand, but I loved the spin-off Lost the Pot Noodle. My preference was for the roast chicken, but both had a good hit of flavour and at 80p per pack they are a great lock-down lunch or emergency dinner option. Available in all major supermarket chains. I definitely need to hunt down a chicken and mushroom pot noodle too, for old times sake.

Here we have a few items that you’re likely to find in our store cupboard regularly (but we had actually run out of). We love the Very Lazy chopped chillies- we add them to stir fries mainly, and in place of fresh chillies where a recipe calls for them, it saves the pain of chopping and also saves waste as well.
Since we started batch cooking more (hello new freezer) stock pots have become a must-have for casseroles, soups and, well, just about everything really! I find the pots have more flavour than stock cubes and make a lot less mess; I’m yet to master the art of crumbling a stock cube!
Chillies £1.50 from all major supermarket chains (we also regularly buy and use the garlic). Stock pots 95p per two pack.

Snacks Snacks Snacks! I love snacks. Boka bars have been my favourite cereal bar since I first tried one a few years ago thanks to Degustabox. These bars have the perfect texture, taste amazing and score all green on the nutritional traffic lights. They come in 4 flavours and my favourite is hands down the choco mallow one. They cost 75p per bar or £2 for a pack of 4. Available from Sainsburys, Amazon or the Boka website.
The Bounce Almond Plant protein ball was also really, really good. Full of vegan protein, fibre and nut butter…all for under 160 calories. I’m hooked. £1.69 from Holland and Barrett, BP and WHSmith stores.

I’m not entirely sure you should mess with a classic, and nothing will ever beat the original Jaffa Cakes, but these new flavours were quite exciting. I was all over the cherry ones which Bob rejected in favour of the passion fruit ones. Both pair really well with the dark chocolate and iconic sponge base… I would happily eat both again but only if orange wasn’t available! £1.20 per pack from all major grocery store chains.

Love to share?! I do not love to share where these Milkybar Cookies and Cream bits are concerned. Creamy white chocolate with crunchy cookie pieces? I could eat these all day everyday if I wouldn’t wind up the size of a house. £1.59 from most major supermarket chains.

And finally we have a nice cup of tea! Eloments Vitamin Tea (Ceylon breakfast blend) is not only a delicious cuppa in it’s own right, but it also boats 9 essential vitamins including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, vitamin C and zinc. Wow. All derived from herbs, fruits and spices this is probably the hardest working brew you’ll have in your life! It’s also certified organic and fair trade. It costs £3.99 from Holland and Barrett & Ocado.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s round up. Let me know which products caught your eye the most and what some of your favourite festive snacks are.

If you’re new to Degustabox, it’s a monthly food subscription box that gives you the chance to try new and exciting products on the market whilst providing amazing value for money.
On a month by month basis the box costs £12.99 (with a discount for longer subscriptions) but the contents are generally worth far more than this as you can see if you do the maths.

If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim £3.00 off of your first box (making it just £9.99!) by entering the code XOQGC at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand regularly over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

Win a Mother’s Day Bouquet with The Flower Shops*

Flowers gifted by The Flower Shops

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and flowers are always a fail safe gift to show Mum just how much you care, especially when they are as beautiful as the ones I received from The Flower Shops.

The Flower Shops is a family run network of florists all over the UK. They have a dedicated florist in each region of the country, meaning wherever your order is headed it has been expertly selected and crafted just for you.

I was recently sent a bouquet from The Flower Shops to show how the concept works and I was blown away by what I received. I can honestly say this is the nicest bunch of flowers I have ever been sent in my life- so gorgeous presented and carefully packaged meaning there was not a petal out of place when they arrived. I wish we had a better home layout in terms of places to actually stand things to photograph things so that I could have showed these off in their best light, but alas we don’t, but I think you get the picture!

The Flower Shops currently have a competition running for Mother’s Day 2021 where you can win a luxurious bouquet worth £100! It’s super easy to enter and I promise you, whichever Mum gets this will be one happy lady!
You can find all of the information to enter here.

If you’re wondering how to make the best of (another) lockdown Mother’s Day then the company have also put together a guide with some simple ideas of how to celebrate either in person or from afar.

Good luck if you decide to enter, let me know what makes your mum great in the comments (although I wouldn’t know where to start with answering this myself, my mother is an absolute legend!)

Keeping up Healthier Habits*

This isn’t a post all about New Year’s resolutions; I never make them anymore as the guilt over not keeping them kind of defeats the point.
This is more about some changes I’ve made over the last few months, just small ones in a bid to be that little bit healthier and save a bit of money, and I wanted to share some of the products that have helped me on my way.

Gifted/PR Products

I’ve talked before about my dislike of drinking water- in fact drinking any drink that doesn’t contain caffeine or carbonation. I’ve really had to work hard to force myself to reduce my consumption of both though, with the IVF process underway it’s driven me to do the best I can for my body, and if that involves some caffeine withdrawal headaches then so be it!
This adorable bottle from ION8 may be targeted at a market far younger than myself, but I’m a giant kid at heart and I love this cute and playful unicorn design! This bottle is BPA free, totally leakproof (I’ve really put it to the test!) and easily transportable and has been my constant companion in recent weeks. Available from leakproof.co.uk in many colourful designs.

I’m definitely better at drinking water or squash if it’s super cold. At work we have a cold water dispenser which is brilliant, and for on the go I find these reusable ice sticks are fantastic. The perfect size for sticking in your water bottle (also great for a nice cold g&t). These are by Kikkerland and cost around £5- you’ll find them for sale in a wide range of places online.

Lunch is my least favourite meal of the day, and for a long time I tried to interest myself in it by popping in to Waitrose every day for something a bit more exciting. When the first lockdown hit I decided it was time to break this habit and try to find options I could take from home. Fridge space at work is often in high demand so having this hot/cold packs means I can keep a salad or sandwich perfectly cool, and when I take soup with me I can also keep it much warmer than my thermos flask alone can do. Another great Kikkerland product, again you’ll find these available at a variety of retailers for around a fiver in a variety of fun designs.

I’m doing pretty well with my goals, and my kitchen drawers are almost overflowing with bits and pieces like this to help me on my way. There is always room for a few more though, so if you’ve spotted anything I might like, or have any recommendations be sure to let me know!

Degustabox: December 2020*

Hello, and Happy New Year! A much later return to blogging than I anticipated but it’s been a crazy few weeks and I’ve just not felt “in the zone”. But I’m back now, and hopefully (maybe) with a bit more regularity this year.
I’m kicking things off with the only feature I manage to do on a regular basis- my review of the last Degustabox of 2020…

Box gifted by Degustabox
This is a PR box, this means there will sometimes be additional flavours or products than you’d get as a subscriber, I will highlight this within my post.

The December 2020 box was in partnership with Sainsbury’s, designed to showcase a range of exciting brands that the supermarket stock. We used to get a regular delivery from Sainsbury’s pre Covid-19 but don’t live near enough to a store to visit frequently. I miss the new and unusual goodies I always got from there so this box was very quickly broken in to and explored.

First up is this vegan Aioli from Leon. Made using aquafaba (a chickpea stock) rather than eggs, this is perfect for anyone missing their garlicky mayo fix. It packs a good garlicky punch, although as I don’t like regular mayo I can’t compare. £2.50.
The Odysea Aubergine Meze Dip was a real hit with us over Christmas. This is super thick and smoky tasting and we enjoyed it best with strips of toasted pitta bread alongside some cold meats. The real bonus here is that it doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge- fridge space is always at a premium in our house especially in December! Will definitely get this again, especially for BBQs come Summer. £2.15.

I loved the sourdough bites from Peter’s Yard. Sour Cream and Chive is never my first flavour choice but these were delicious. They are so crunchy and made using flour from my part of the world. They are a lighter snack option at 98 calories per 26g serving and a good source of fibre. A bit on the pricey side at £2 but definitely something I would get again on offer.
Bob jumped in on the Pipers crisps. He loved the herby ones best, but said both have a really good flavour and a touch of luxury to them. These are definitely more for social occasions rather than something to take with your packed lunch at £1.20 for a 40g bag (£2.50 for a 150g bag) but crisp lovers will definitely appreciate them.
I skipped trying this tea because I can’t stomach ginger in drinks and Bob doesn’t do any tea but Yorkshire. They look fun though and the fact the brand uses biodegradable materials for their tea bags is great. £2.75 per pack.
I’m a fizzy drink fiend and I’m forever trying to cut down, but non sparkling drinks just don’t cut it for me. I really like this Dash water in Peach- the packaging is gorgeous, and I love that they use “wonky” fruit for their products. With no added sugar or sweetner this is a really good alternative to my usual pepsi max. £1.25 a can.
Bob and I love packets like this to jazz up our meals in quick and easy ways. This is used to create a chicken “Tinga”- a shredded chicken dish, although we used it as a marinade for some chicken (all about the quick and easy) and it was really good. Smoky rather than spicy, I think this would make excellent fajitas. £1.30.
Another pepsi max alternative for me, hurrah! This Pineapple soft drink from Nexba looks so fun! I would have liked a stronger pineapple flavour, but the flavour is does have is so good. Again with no sugar, artificial sweeters or fructose as well as a whole host of other benefits, this is another winner for me. £1.25.

We still haven’t got around to trying this tropical IPA from CLWB Tropica, but even non beer or lager drinking me is tempted by this with it’s flavours of pineapples, passionfruit, mangoes and peaches. I might crack it open tonight in fact. £2.

Tony’s Chocolonely has grown in popularity over the last year or so, which is great to see. I’ve been munching on it for a good while now (Dutch family) and they truly do make the most deliciously chunky chocolate bars ever. If you haven’t already treated yourself, you should. There are some amazing flavours on the market- this one is milk caramel sea salt and comes highly recommended. £1.35.

Last but not least we have some great little snack items. The cocoa caramel peanuts were Bob’s favourite product this month- lightly caramelised peanuts dusted with cocoa powder and salt is a great combination and incredibly addictive.
I have long loved roasted chickpeas and these ones from Brave are so crunchy and packed with flavour. They are full of protein and fibre and keep you full for ages. I’m desperate to try the dark chocolate ones next!
£1.20 for the peanuts and £1 for the chickpeas.

I hope you enjoyed this month’s round up. Let me know which products caught your eye the most and what some of your favourite festive snacks are.

Radical Equality with The Other Bar

The Other Bar

The Other Bar is an experiment in Radical Equality, designed to take a bite out of poverty through the simple act of buying a chocolate bar.

Powered by the UNDP and FairChain Foundation.

The first step in radical equality is to buy The Other Bar, the second is scan the token in the pack and help a farmer buy a cocoa tree. When scanned it’s equivalent to a quarter of a cocoa-producing tree. So for every four bars bought, a farmer can grow more, earn more and feed his family thanks to a fairer system.

There’s a twist. You don’t have to spend the token on a tree, you could use it to get 25p off your next purchase. Either way, it’s a win win for farmers.

At the moment farmers only get 3% of the value of the cocoa used to produce the chocolate we see in the shops, this means that the majority of farmers struggle to make a liveable income.

The system of buying for a low price and then selling for an inflated one has produced a huge imbalance in the world.
At the moment global brands spend more than £500 billion a year on advertising, and we only need £140 billion to end world poverty- imagine if we could convince manufacturers to invest some of the money they spend on advertising on having a positive impact?

Right now there is a really easy way in which we can help. All we need to do is purchase The Other Bar and we’re already making a difference.
Even better, if you use the code RADICALEQUALITY when you purchase your bar you will get a pack of 4 bars – the equivalent to 1 new cacao tree – for the price of 1 bar.
What’s stopping you getting involved and pushing for #radicalequality

(Also, having tried this chocolate myself I can confirm it’s really bloody delicious and I’ll swiftly be popping over to the online shop to do my bit!)
