A Year of Living

As we creep in to a new year, and indeed a new decade it seems an ideal time to reflect and look back on what has been an absolute rollercoaster of a time.
As we welcomed in 2010 (which doesn’t really seem all that long ago) I was quite frankly dying. At my lowest ebb both physically and mentally I’m not entirely sure how my body survived all it had to endure whilst I was in the deepest grips of anorexia, nor how it survived the subsequent cycle of relapse and recovery that came in the following years.

And yet somehow here we are, here I am, after a 17 year battle which I can now firmly and confidently say I’m winning. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it’s within reaching distance.

So what’s changed?
Primarily I’ve changed. Everything has changed. The only thing that remains the same from the shadow of myself I was in 2010 is the love and support of my family and closest friends. Everything else is near unrecognisable and for that I am grateful.

I never dared to dream I’d reach this point. The (almost) confident, (not so young) woman I have become. I never for one second imagined I’d be entering the next decade almost recovered. Without every waking second dictated by food and how to avoid it. Engaged to the most wonderful man; planning our wedding and considering the next stages such as starting a family.

My body no longer defines me, and whilst I struggle on a daily basis with my body image I certainly care a whole lot less. These days my focus has shifted. It’s not about getting to the lowest acceptable healthy weight, it’s about preparing my body for, hopefully, carrying a child- how can you nourish and grow a whole new life when you can’t nourish yourself?

Food has become fun. There’s not really anything off limits these days (aside from the obvious things like brains and intestines). I’ve learnt to enjoy meals out at restaurants that don’t list the calories, our trip to America was all about how many types of M&Ms I could get my hands on, and our daily meals are chosen based on what Bob and I fancy, not what fits my once super-rigid meal plan. I eat biscuits in work these days, in fact let’s take a moment to appreciate that I now eat in work, full stop. This was once one of my greatest fears, and is now one of the social highlights of my day.

Food aside this has been an amazing year for personal growth. Our holiday of a lifetime was a really rewarding reminder of how much both Bob and myself have matured as people. Starting to plan our wedding is exciting and stressful in equal measures and feels scarily adult. I’ve started socialising more; and I’ve enjoyed it.

Life isn’t perfect, but if it were perfect it would be boring. There are tears and tantrums (especially when PMS is involved) and there are times I wonder what the fuck I am doing when I start questioning whether I should be eating something, or whether I should join a gym or not.

I think what I’m trying to say in all of this is that life feels gloriously normal for the firs time. There are ups and downs that pass, but no dramas, no despair. There is still progress to be made, but healthy progress with no urgency.
I’m sure this won’t be the last post I write about my recovery, I’m not quite there yet after-all; something I have to remind myself from time to time, but it won’t be the focus, just as it’s not the focus for me as a whole anymore.
It would be all to easy to be bitter about my past, the years spent worrying and wasting but I’m not. Whilst there’s certainly no looking back with fondness as the mental and physical agony of an eating disorder, I have to thank it in some ways for making me who I am today; strong, capable, stubborn and insightful.

After a disastrous start to the decade that we are now waving farewell to, I am so beyond excited for such a brilliant start to the new one- I can’t wait to see, smell, experience and taste everything the 2020s have to offer.

Pure Retinol Biphase Serum from SkinChemists*

Pure Retinol Biphase Serum c/o skinChemists

You should all know by now how much I love the skinChemists brand, so when I got an e-mail about their Pure Retinol Biphase Serum, with it’s impressive sounding list of benefits I was game on for trying it.

I’m still finding my feet in terms of skincare, and now I am over thirty my focus is very much on anti-ageing over anything else. This serum promises to not only prevent wrinkles, but smooth over existing fine lines. It also says it’ll brighten dull skin and help remove age spots, hyper-pigmentation and sun damage.

The packaging fits well with the skinChemists brand, always on the minimal side whilst looking sleek and luxe.

After a patch test (as advised) and discovering no reactions I jumped in to incorporating this in to my skincare routine; something I can now say I have, and awaiting the miracle.

Ok, so there may not have been a miracle, I didn’t wake up looking ten years younger the next day, but there is definitely a difference in how my skin looks, and feels.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what is different, there has been no drastic changes, but subtle differences that all add up; I’ve lost some of that winter dullness, my fine lines look finer and everything looks all around more even and a heck of a lot healthier.

I’ve been using this after cleansing in the evening and a tiny bit goes a long way, meaning it’s £39.90 price-tag isn’t too bad as this little bottle will last for ages.
I don’t have much to compare it too, I’ve never used anything like it before, but I really like this product. It makes me feel like I’m doing something positive for my skin and it’s making a slow but sure visible difference.

If you’d like to give this a try for yourself then skinChemist are offering a 30% discount when you use the code LAURA30 at the checkout. Let me know if you give it a whirl.

North Sails is the Official Clothing Partner of America’s Cup presented by Prada

Leading sailing brand North Sails are proud to announce that they are the Official Clothing Partner for the next America’s Cup presented by Prada.
The competition is now in it’s 36th year and is arguably the most legendary event in the sailing calendar.

Since 1980 North Sails have powered 12 boats to victory and, since 1988 they have supplied sails to every defender and challenger of America’s Cup so this is a massive achievement for the brand and one they are rightly proud to shout about.

To celebrate these historic wins and achievements, North Sails have put together a collection of men’s and women’s clothing crafted entirely from recycled materials that push the limits of sustainable innovation and confirm North Sails’ commitment to protecting the oceans for the sailors of tomorrow.
The collection’s signature looks include the 3layer Newport Jacket – breathable, windproof and waterproof thanks to the heat-welded seam construction – and the vest with Repreve padding made from recycled materials, including plastic bottles.
Next up, the ultimate style staples for weather protection – the San Francisco shell jacket crafted from windproof and waterproof recycled polyester and the San Diego softshell jacket made from water resistant high-performance recycled polyester obtained through a sustainable production process that reduces CO2 emissions by 75%, compared to traditional polyester.
Last but certainly not least, the Auckland polo shirt tinged with the iconic colourways of America’s Cup, as well as the baseball cap that rounds off this exclusive look, made of recycled PET material.
Explore the entire North Sails Collection that pays homage to the world’s oldest sailing race and celebrates its adventurous spirit with signature hues, functional details and ocean-friendly materials.

I’m not a sailor myself but I massively admire North Sails for what they have achieved, and what they are striving to do with their ethical credentials.

For much more information on the collaboration, and about the competition itself you can visit the website – it does a far better job than I ever could!

The August Degustabox*

I feel like I am SO late with my post this month- August already feels like a lifetime ago. Last month’s Degustbox (gifted) had a back to school/on the go themed and was packed full of portable snacks and treats. As ever, some brief thoughts on each product below, if you want more detailed reviews of any of them just let me know.

My cousin’s little girl absolutely loves these jelly pouches from jelly-squeeze. They have no added sugar or sweeteners and are mess free making them perfect for lunch boxes. They are even suitable for vegans!
KitKats are so under-rated in my book. They are one of my favourite chocolate treats, it was always such a great day at school when you found one minus any wafer! These KitKat senses bring a grown up twist to the classic. Neither of these were flavours I’d choose in a shop as a rule, but both were really yummy and the perfect size for little indulge with a cup of tea.

The child in me loved these snacks from Fruit Bowl. Yoghurt coated fruit is one of my favourite treats (yeah, I’m a bit odd) and both the raisins and the strawberries were swiftly inhaled. The Unicorn fruit flakes have jumped on to a trend bandwagon here, but are a tasty little snack nevertheless and all of these are ideal for chucking in a school bag, or handbag for snacking on the go.
I’ve never really been able to stomach protein mikshake type drinks (too many memories of nutritional supplement drinks in my past) so I passed on this, but for those who are in to that kind of thing this one packs some serious health credentials. 22g of protein, no added sugar and low in fat…I’d be interested to hear other people’s thoughts.
I loved these teas from Pure Leaf, especially the green tea with jasmine which has long been a favourite of mine. I passed the Gunpowder Green tea on to my grandad as he’s a big fan and it got a thumbs up from him (both thumbs, actually). Made with all natural ingredients, these look lovely sat in the kitchen too.

How cute are these little pots of peanut butter from Manilife? Pre-portion and roasted to perfection, I love these! The crunchy one is amazing in crumpets FYI…and the smooth is amazing on, well, everything!
Nutella fans may also enjoy the Nuttvia Hazelnut spread- it’s pretty delicious for something that has 97% less sugar than other leading brands, and it also boasts being palm oil free so you can eat it with a clear conscience both health wise and planet wise!
I don’t really like fruit flavoured chocolate so the dark chocolate raspberry almond dips from Mighty Fine weren’t quite my cup of tea. They also come in a plain dark chocolate variety which I’d be eager to try, and I love the concept of a healthy but indulgent snack that’s perfect for busy lifestyles.

Attack a Snak Nachos looked to be a bit of a gimmick on first inspection, but on delving deeper they are a pretty good idea. Perfect for post-school munchies, or a pre-dinner snack for grown ups, these might be a novelty but I’m all for it.

A childhood staple; Heinz Beef Ravioli (which sadly arrived dented). I’ve loved this since I was a kid and it’s still one of my comfort foods now, for a quick and easy lunch you can’t go wrong.

Since we got engaged I’ve gone from being pretty much tee-total to enjoying a drink on a fairly regular basis. Wine isn’t really my thing, but this pale rosé from Blossom Hill is light enough for my palate to handle, and it’s lovely with some diet lemonade, ice and strawberries.

In this month’s box there was also a voucher to pick up some Strings and Things Cheeseshapes from the folks that bought you Cheesestrings. Unfortunately Pablo shredded the voucher (along with several other letters and pieces of paper) so I didn’t get to try this…I also haven’t seen them in local shops yet, but I’m all for a novelty so watch this space!

If you’re new to Degustabox, it’s a monthly food subscription box that gives you the chance to try new and exciting products on the market whilst providing amazing value for money.
On a month by month basis the box costs £12.99 (with a discount for longer subscriptions) but the contents are generally worth far more than this as you can see if you do the maths.

It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand regularly over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

Review: Liquid Ice Nic+

[post contains gifted items]

It’s been a while since I posted any vape related content, not because I’ve lapsed (although I do confess to a couple of cigarettes when I’ve had a drink in my hand) but because I haven’t tried anything that new, or that noteworthy. I’ve become quite settled in my routine, but as part of the vaping experience is the wide range of flavours and liquids available I will never turn down the chance to try something new.

I was recently re-contacted by Liquid Ice who I teamed up with a few months back.

They very kindly sent me a range of flavours from their collection of Nicotine+, their evolution of nicotine products. I was incredibly intrigued as to how this could be different and whether it would impress.

Nicotine + is the evolution of nicotine and features some of the vape world’s most famous flavours, the full line-up includes Red Astaire, Black n Blue, Green Kelly, Lizzy rascal and Gin’s Addiction and is available in 10 and 20 mg.

Nicotine + enhances flavour of e-liquids as it has a lower PH compared to normal nicotine which means you will get a smoother throat hit. It also provides faster absorption of nicotine into the body you will feel instant satisfaction.

I was sent the above three flavours, all of which I reviewed and rated highly in my previous post with Liquid Ice….so was Nic+ any different? And if so, was it different in a good way?

I would say yes, yes it is. The flavour of the juices was very much the same- all three of these juices pack a big punch and are firm favourites.
In terms of smoothness there is a marked difference- I often find the higher nicotine juices a bit too harsh but these definitely weren’t, and I definitely noticed that I was satisfied, perhaps even satiated with a much lesser amount meaning I’ve been vaping less making them slightly more economical too.

For anyone big in to their vaping I’d recommend giving Nicotine+ a go, it’s a really interesting concept and I’d like to see a bigger range of flavours available in the future.
