Holiday Post 2: Ventura, Santa Barbara and Big Sur

Following on from my previous post, where I left off in the Mojave Desert, we continued our epic drive in to California. This was the longest drive we did, if I recall correctly, with a total of around 11 hours in the car…did we tire of it? Not really, the scenery when you drive through America is incredible vs. what you see in the UK and because everything was new to us it was all incredibly exciting. The worst part of the drive was through LA and Hollywood- somewhere we elected not to stop in favour of other places within the time constrains of our trip. The traffic was INSANE, as were the other drivers- we were both relieved when that leg of the journey was over.

It was late by the time we made it to our Hotel in Ventura (we stayed at The Amanzi Hotel) so we didn’t get a chance to explore the town much. We did head down to the beach after breakfast though, but it was super overcast so we just had a meander down the pier before driving on to Santa Barbara.

The novelty of facing the beach looking one way and the mountains when you looked the other never really wore off.

By the time we got to Santa Barbara and parked up the sun had started to come through, showing us what California beach life was like. Santa Barbara is such a pretty place and although we didn’t have much time to explore we walked the pier, grabbed a coffee and spent some time watching surfers head out in to the ocean.

Surfer heaven?
The clouds finally lifted!

The next part of our journey was probably our favourite drive of the holiday, with some of the most incredible scenery along the way. We drove through Vineyards and past mansions on the way to one of most anticipated pit-stops and somewhere we wished we had stayed much closer to, and for much longer.

Big Sur and the Californian costal route in general is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever seen. Throughout this trip I found myself constantly in awe of nature and it’s ability to create such stunning scenes.

As one might expect, staying in Big Sur was expensive and therefore we elected not to, with great regret. Our next overnight stop was pretty beautiful to though, we drove a further hour to a place called Carmel-By-The-Sea. This was a town like no other I have seen, really pretty and quaint with enviable houses and a real air of affluence (the local shops included Kate Spade and Tiffany!)
We found the local dining options out of our price range- a common story for many parts of this holiday so we headed to the Del Monte Shopping Centre in search of food. We settled on California Pizza Kitchen which proved a worthy choice in terms of value and deliciousness- I’d never considered brie, chicken and grapes a pizza topping up until now but it needs to be a thing!

We bedded down in a more authentic American Motel that night ready for our most hotly anticipated destinations of the trip- Yosemite National Park and Mammoth Lakes.

Looking back I realise we didn’t take nearly enough photos on this part of the trip. We only took our phones with us and we spent so much time drinking in what we were seeing that taking photos didn’t really occur to us until after the event. Thankfully the memories we made are ones we’ll never forget, but it would have been nice to have more visual memoirs of our dream holiday.

The June 2019 Degustabox

[post contains gifted item]

Somewhere between the haze of getting home from our holiday and going back to work, the June 2019 Degustabox* arrived.
This box genuinely excited me; there were products in there I’d heard of and wanted to try, as well as some new but interesting looking ones and I wasted no time in getting stuck in.

The brightly packaged “Mavericks” snacks are marketed as healthier snack for kids. There are no kids in this house, but I’m always on the lookout for healthy snack options and these fitted the bill nicely. The little strawberry cookies were especially good- fruity little biscuits that reminded me of shortbread. Yum! You’ll find these sold at Sainsburys.
Bob has slightly more mature tastebuds than I do and he enjoyed the SavourSmiths Rosemary and Truffle crisps- a very luxurious snacking experience.
There was also a mystery product in the box “lentil, corn, pea and black bean tortillas”. I have no idea who makes these but they need to become mainstream. These are right up my street and totally addictive.

Whilst I don’t have any dietary restrictions myself, it’s nice to see the free-from market expand as much as it had. The Free From Kitchen Co chocolate bars are perfect for all sorts of allergies and intolerances, the salted caramel one is excellent- and I’m not usually a fan of that flavour.

I’m a long time fan of Trek products so I’m always delighted to see something new from them. The dark chocolate and sea salt protein nut bars are a wholesome and substantial snack boasting 10g of plant-based protein, less than 5g of sugar and a hefty whack of fibre. I highly recommend these if you are looking for a filling but nutritious snack on the go.

Sweets! Randoms are a long time favourite in this house (although I haven’t forgiven the brand for discontinuing tooty frooties!) There’s not much I can say about these that hasn’t been said before- delicious! There were also a couple of gummies from Smith & Sinclair- gin & tonic and mandarin fizz. These are a massive luxury at £15.00 for 8 but contain 8% alcohol and are really rather yummy (but eat five and you’re no longer legal to drive).
Another brand I am a big fan of is Garbanzo. I’ve been munching their flavoured roasted chickpeas for years so was beyond excited to see some new, luxury flavours in their range. These sharing bags are perfect for social gatherings as an alternative to nuts, and each flavour is equally delicious as well as incredibly healthy.
The June box had a BBQ theme and these products were the perfect match. We actually took them to a BBQ the weekend after the box arrived and both the salad dressing from Newman’s Own and the Chilli Mayonnaise (flavoured with Tabasco) went down a storm.

I was only brave enough to try one of the three drinks in this month’s box and that was the Watermelon and Strawberry Cooler from Lucozade. This is a fresh summery twist from a classic brand, and whilst I’m not a fan of sugary drinks as a rule, this was nice.
The other drinks included were DRGN Tumeric Superdrink inspired by the Far East, and Kolibri Botanical Drink which has a curious two part design. Both of these were far too sophisticated for my tastes- if anyone has tried them I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you thought in the comments.

If you’re new to Degustabox, it’s a monthly food subscription box that gives you the chance to try new and exciting products on the market whilst providing amazing value for money.
On a month by month basis the box costs £12.99 (with a discount for longer subscriptions) but the contents are generally worth far more than this as you can see if you do the maths.

If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £5.00 off of your first box (making it just £7.99!) by entering the code 6HZJ8 at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand regularly over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

What’s on my Wish List Right Now

I’ve been such a hopeless blogger lately, I’ve felt so uninspired when it comes to creating posts…the blog world has changed beyond all recognition from when I first started, and that coupled with being incredibly busy over the last few weeks has meant I just haven’t made time to post.

I really want to get back to it though, and create some content that reflects who I am and what I’m loving at the moment. What better place to start than a wish list right? There is so much that I am lusting after at the minute, and I’ve been browsing non-stop for inspiration for up coming weddings to attend and the holiday of a life-time that is rather rapidly approaching. Here is just a sample of what I’m coveting at present…

AngelEye Fashion dress, £145 – I have just discovered this brand and I am OBSESSED!
Lindy Bop striped cotton dress, £38 – the perfect dress for sunny days
Chi Chi London dress, £65 – just one of many occasion-wear pieces I have my eye on from this shop.
Dreamy Rose Gold flats from Moda in Pelle
£79.95
Neon Rose Button Front Dress, £32- this would be so perfect for our Californian road trip!
New Look have some great bikinis right now, I love this one which comes in at just under £25
Another dress perfect for our holiday, I love this Oasis striped midi dress, £49
It’s been a while since Yull shoes featured on the blog but I couldn’t not share these dreamy Margate Mermaid sandals, £115

So there you have my current cravings. Sadly none of these will be joining me just yet as my focus had to be replacing clothes I have grown out of (yay recovery!) and every spare penny is heading straight to the holiday spending fund.

What’s caught your eye lately? And what kind of content would you like to see more or less of on the blog?

The April Degustabox

Confession: I’ve actually lost the leaflet that came with the April Degustabox (gifted) with all of the product info and prices, and this is probably the most hurried post I will ever write for them as somehow there just aren’t enough hours in the day this week, but if I leave it any longer then the next box will be here and I’ll still have written nothing! I really need to get myself better organised, I seem to be constantly chasing my tail at the moment and getting nowhere fast.

These Pacha Mama bars were right up my street, especially as I’m trying to snack healthier at the moment. I love how transportable bars like this are, perfect for keeping in your handbag, providing a much needed, delicious burst of energy on the go. The cocao and cashew flavour especially was a hit and I’ll be keeping my eye on this brand for sure.

Bob and I are very particular when it comes to tea and for the most part stick to one brand. Typhoo is a British institution though, and we were won over by the charming packaging and refreshing taste. We made short work of this box.
I’m going through a real cereal kick at the moment and Cheerios are a long-time favourite of mine. I’m currently addicted to the peanut butter and chocolate variety fresh from the USA by way of B&M (guess what I’ll be bringing back from my holiday?) but for something a bit more nutritious these oat cheerios are delicious. Did anyone else get a look in on this box? Err, nope!

I’m a big fan of the Candy Kittens brand when it comes to sweets. They really deliver on flavour, and these wild strawberry are so good. They are also vegan friendly (not that you could tell from the texture, win!) and are shaped like little kitties- what’s not to love?

His ‘n hers savoury snacking – Bob loved these sticky ribs flavoured crisps from London Flavours, and I very much enjoyed the smoked bbq corn snack from Love Corn- I have been wanting to try this brand for ages and it didn’t let me down- they are dangerously addictive.

These were my product of the month! White and milk chocolate crispies from the Skinny Food Co. I’ve been eyeing this brand up on Instagram, and whilst I’d probably give their calorie free syrups a miss (because I have worked so hard to move away from that) these protein bites are a perfect little snack coming in at 99 calories per bag. The white chocolate are particularly good and I am going to be stocking myself up ASAP.
Bob’s eyes lit up when he saw this steak house sauce in the box. We haven’t had time to try it yet but we will report back in due course. Bring on the beef!

Elderflower is one of my favourite flavours, and this drink is beautifully light and refreshing. It’s a great grown up alternative to squash- Vimto is fab but not very sophisticated! A real hit from cult brand Robinsons.

As I mentioned earlier, I try and avoid products like this as I’ve moved so far away from relying on them that I’d really rather not go back. A great idea though, for anyone who is looking for a low cal filling lunch idea.
A true British classic- Heinz tomato soup, in a handy pot that goes straight in the microwave. Sadly mine arrived damaged (leaking!) so I haven’t tested how good this is, but it’s a good idea and ideal for work day lunches when I’m feeling lazy.

I’ve always loved Cracker Drinks Co and Bob might have fallen a bit in love having tried this mango and passionfruit juice drink. I love the cute little carton and jazzy packaging too.

Finally another classic from Heinz, with an organic twist. The same great taste but all natural- perfect for a comforting tea of beans on toast with lots of cheese!

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you thought in the comments.

I’ll try and be a bit more on-it with next month’s post, although I have a feeling that timing wise I’m going to be even more pushed as we prepare for our USA road trip holiday!

Review: In The Book

[Ad: post contains gifted item]

Book c/o In The Book

I’m always looking for unique gift ideas and was recently stumped when it came to finding something to get Bob for our second anniversary (where has that time gone?). So, it was important the gift was something sensible and useful, not more money to be wasted at sites such as WizardSlots.
In the end I lucked out as I was contacted by In The Book to see if I was interested in reviewing one of their products just as I was beginning to think I’d never find a cool enough gift.
Ok, so technically as this was a gift to me, it wasn’t quite a gift to Bob, but it was a great opportunity and the resulting product blew us both away.

In The Book are book specialists who take well loved stories; be it a childhood favourite or a classic work of fiction and give it a personalised touch. What better gift to give than make someone a part of their favourite book? I was given something very much like this when I was a small child and it remains one of my favourite possessions to this day.

When it came to picking out a product to review I actually skipped past the story books and straight to the newspaper style pictorial books. Bob and I both share a love of wartime history, especially World War 2 and The Battle of Britain, so this beautifully bound Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary Pictorial Edition Newspaper Book, £79.99 was an obvious choice.

You may balk a little at the price tag, I did at first, but the second this book arrived and I presented it to Bob we could see why it was priced this way. This is a work of art and beautifully presented. It really does make for a special gift and we immediately spent a good couple of hours exploring the pages.

The pages of this book are crammed full of actual newspaper articles from 1940 onwards. It’s not the kind of book you can sit and devour in one sitting and this will provide us entertainment, and enlightenment for ages.

In The Book has many of these newspaper style books covering all interests, as well as classic novels, children’s favourites and some very tongue in cheek humour titles. I cannot recommend this company enough for gift ideas for book lovers and for those eager to learn. These will make for true keepsake gifts that will be treasured for years to come.

What title would you most like to see yourself transported in to?
