My trusty old laptop is becoming a little less trusty. Age is catching up with it and every so often it throws a fit and crashes for no reason. It worries me as one day it won’t turn back on and I’ll have once again lost everything (you’d think I would have learnt from the demise of my previous laptop several years ago). Even if I manage to afford a new blogging buddy before this one goes to the scrapheap in the sky I’ll be hard pushed to recover everything off it, thankfully Tesco Compare came to my rescue by providing me with an external hard drive to back up everything that’s important to me.
There are many benefits to be had from an external hard drive that I had never really considered before. It was always something I was meaning to get but never quite got around to. I have to say it’s a worthy investment though- backing up my photos, blog files, music and downloads was really quick and easy. Did you know that home insurance will often cover the loss of digital downloads and music should anything happen to it? I didn’t and I’m glad now that I do.
Hard drives often have a very large capacity, my model is 3TB (or 3000GB). This is much bigger than my laptop’s storage space so I had no worries about being able to get everything on there and it’s also a secure storing space for photos or videos that you don’t have space for on your computer (vloggers and bloggers take note!)
It also means all of your information is portable so if you moved house and say, your computer got lost in the move you would still have everything in one (fairly) light weight space. Brilliant.

I’m no longer so worried about my laptop’s days being numbered, everything is backed up and ready to be transferred to it’s successor and I never need fear about losing precious photos my music library again.
This seems very handy, i could do with one of thse

We back all of our info up after learning the heard way. Well worth the money to get.

This is a really helpful post.
I wish I understood this computer stuff better. My computer’s maker doesn’t make updates for my operating system any more and it crashes often. I should probably get an external hard drive like yours only I know nothing other than what I’ve read right here about it. I’ve already lost stuff. I wonder if I’ll buy one of these before I lose the rest? I wonder if they’re compatible with all different systems and how secure they are. Am I worrying too much? The 3 TB sounds good.
I’ve been meaning to buy one for a while. My laptop is an old school one which now belongs to me as they’ve given us tablets (which are terrible). I keep worry g the same, that its going to die any day. How much does the 3tb one cost? X
Hi Kezzie,
I believe the model I have (it’s by Seagate who are apparently very good) is £78.99 on amazon. You can probably get slightly smaller storage for cheaper too, or a different brand. Hope that helps!
I’m with you on this one! I always worry about losing everything on my laptop, it’s happened before! A little while ago I thought it was time I invested in an external hard drive but I never got round to it. That was until my brother was selling one that he’d bought and didn’t need, and since it was cheaper than retail I thought I’d take it off his hands. It’s still sat in the box upstairs… but I’m going to put backing up on my list of things to do this week 🙂 xxx
