Haphazard Holidays

I’m pretty sure that anyone embarking on a holiday with me dreads it from the second it gets booked. It’s not that I’m accident prone as such, but I do seem to be a magnet for stupidity- namely my own. Thankfully there’s only been one occasion where I’ve come back from a trip abroad injured. I’d like to say I had an amusing, adventurous story but fact is I got tripped down a flight of steps in Zara whilst visiting family in Holland and wound up walking on a semi-healed fracture in my foot for six months…yeah. I didn’t dare tell anyone when I planned a para-sailing excursion when last in Spain!

It looks like I’m not the only one who attracts disaster though, this infographic from the My Voucher Codes team shows that Brit’s abroad quite often ends in trouble.

I thought given that the holiday season is now drawing to a close (four weeks and counting until it’s my turn!) I’d ask what your worst holiday disaster has ever been. Shame yourselves below…

  1. Hmmm, not sure really. Almost missing my flight on the way home from Bali because BA had printed my ticket with only 20kg luggage allowance rather than the 42kg that my Stepmum had arranged for me so they told me I was 27kg over my luggage allowance and it was $100 per extra kilo. I didn’t realise the ticket mistake and was crying at them in the excess luggage lounge for well over an hour while they kept asking me for a credit card I didn’t have. They refused to phone BA to check in the Australia Airlines office (who ran the first flight of my ticket) and I’d run out of credit on my Bali phone sim. Eventually, as the flight drew nearer, the man eventually gave in and let me go without paying. It was awful!x

  2. Interesting that Spain was the sickest.

Worse holiday was getting stopped at customs on my way to Venice – bag thoroughly searched. Reason why? My Mum had popped some shampoo in without telling me and it was in my hand luggage. Man ended up calling my Mum to get her to confirm this!

I don’t think it’s that much of a shock that Spain had the highest number of hospitalisations for sickness or injuries – Spain is by far the most travelled holiday destination for Brits – if it were by percentages Spain probably would’t have even been in the top three for hospitalisations..

    Interesting infographic!

  4. I think a lot of people in the UK go to Spain for a mad one, especially places like Benidorm so it’s no surprise people get injured and ill! My brother got badly injured in Greece when we were little but it was his own fault, he was running by the pool and slipped haha x
