Green Bug

Since harvesting my first crop of tomatoes this year (after a somewhat uncertain start) I’ve been bitten by the gardening bug. I think I’ve mentioned before my desire to grow my own fruit and vegetables and now I have had some minor success this has become greater. Space in our garden is somewhat limited so I’ve been looking for tips and tricks for growing in confined spaces…

Container growing looks to be the best option, indeed our tiny little tomato plant flourished in a bag of compost in a small wooden trough and rapidly took over it’s little corner of the patio, apparently lettuce, cabbage and potatoes will also flourish in this type of environment, and if those don’t appeal I’d hazard a guess that with the right type of soil you’d get away with most things.

I’d love to hear from any readers who have had success with growing in containers…what have you grown and did it take much care (my green thumbs are lethal at times)
What about growing fruit and vegetables indoors? Does that work at all?
One day, I’d love an allotment,
until then…I NEED HELP!
Nothing beats the taste of home grown produce. I love when people at work bring in their crops for us to take home…

This is a sponsored post but very relevant to my current interests and dreams. I really do think I missed my calling in life as a farmer

  1. My mum grows a lot of her own veg as well as tomatoes and I’m always the one that has to eat them! When I have my own place I want to grow as much as I can!

  2. I have had success growing peppers and chillis in tubs 🙂 I imagine cucumbers and runner beans would grow pretty well in a large container aslong as they had plenty of support! Definitely give it a go next year!

  3. My sister brought me a bag full of apples from her garden at the weekend. I’m so jealous, I live in a flat so can’t really grow trees. My flat mate and I have herbs growing and I’ve talked of getting a little poly tent thing for the balcony to grow more. Still a bit of a pipe dream at the mo but it’s good to know that tomatoes etc can grow in pots without much room.

  4. I’d love to grow my own fruit and vegetables but the closest I’ve ever got was one of those little men that looked like potatoes that grew grass out of their head…

  5. I grow chillis indoors every year by the kitchen window. I buy the plants at markets and the best high cropping/small size plant is the Apache chilli. Do it x

  6. I totally fail at growing things! I’m impressed by anyone who can keep vegetable crops alive long enough to generate food. The only things I’ve been able to grow successfully are carnivorous plants – I think that says a lot about my mad scientist tendencies!

  7. Peppers and chillis are fairly easy to grow indoors as are herbs 🙂

  8. we grow are own blackberries, tomatoes and potatoes. so tasty! my grampa used to grow everything!! 🙂 x

  9. I wish I had the ability to grow things! Unfortunately for me I kill more plants than I can keep alive. My mom grows a lot of herbs though, and I love the smell of those 🙂 Nice Post!

  11. Beans do well in containers if you give them something to climb up, courgettes are good in big tubs, sweetcorn will grow in pots (although the snails have nibbled most of mine 🙁 )

There’s some pics of container veg on my blog at http://wittgensteinswateringcan.blogspot.com/2011/08/imagining-nothing-still-writing-about.html and http://wittgensteinswateringcan.blogspot.com/2011/06/peas.html

    Happy growing!

  12. I read somewhere about a guy using old dustbins to grow things in because he had a back problem or something. I imagine they’d be good for long things like carrots or things you can get a lot of in one batch like potatoes. 🙂

  13. when we move house we’re going to grow all sorts in our new garden – fruit, veg, herbs. i literally cannot wait! x
