4 style ideas to help you sparkle during party season*

Party season is officially in full swing, but with so many occasions to attend it can often be difficult working out what to wear. So, whether it’s a New Year’s bash or a great night out with friends why not give one of these simple ideas ago? These four finishing touches will have you standing out in any crowd, whatever your style.

Fancy footwear

Whether it’s sequins, embellishment, prints or bold colours, the rule with footwear at this time of the year is the fancier the better. One of the easiest ways to feel fantastic as you head off for a night out this winter is to invest in a new pair of statement shoes. Regardless of your preferred heel height, choose a design that really speaks for itself leaving you free to pair them with a simple little black dress at a moment’s notice. Think embellished sandals, velvet mules and printed pumps. The Gucci shoes collection has some perfect designs for hitting the dance floor in.

Colourful clutches

A simple way to add some wow factor to your favourite outfit is with an eye-catching clutch and, they were spotted all over this season’s catwalks from Valentino to Balenciaga. There are so many options when it comes to accessorising with a clutch bag; think big and relaxed hugged close to the body or small and structured. As far as colour is concerned, any hue will keep you on trend, but metallic tones and sequins work great for party season and allow you to leave the rest of your look relatively simple.

Jaw-dropping jewellery

Ever get the feeling something is missing from your outfit? It may be time to invest in some statement jewellery. If earrings are your thing then hoops are always a great option and are perfect for dressing up any look. Alternatively, if you’re looking for some a little classier, embellished pendant earrings could be the accessory you’re looking for. Team with an off-the-shoulder dress for Old Hollywood glamour and maximum impact.

Statement make-up

It’s the oldest trick in the book but nothing adds some extra oomph to an outfit quite like a slick of statement lipstick. For this season think deep shades of plum and red depending on your skin tone. Pair it with simple eye make to make sure your look isn’t too overpowering.

Have fun with hair accessories

It’s one of the more difficult trends to pull off but quirky hair accessories could be the perfect solution to taking your festive party outfits to the next level. This season’s trends included feathered clips, tortoiseshell slides and leather Alice bands. Max Mara even sent models down the runway wearing crystal-embellished monogrammed hair clips. Again, the key to making this look work for you is to tone everything else down. If there’s too much going on your hair accessories may overwhelm your outfit.

Christmas Shopping Without Busting Your Budget*

With just a few weeks to go before Christmas hits us, festivities are ramping up around us. The shops are already full to the brim with decorations, sequinned party dresses and festive lattes, your diary is starting to fill up and there’s only one pay packet to go. This time of year is exciting but it can also be hugely expensive. The number of people who go into debt to afford all the Christmas extras is on the rise, and that’s a worrying trend. There is a huge leap in the amount of people using debt counselling agencies in January and February, and you don’t want to be one of them. As much as Christmas is a time for luxury and excess, starting the New Year weighed down with debt is not a good idea at all. But if you’ve left it too late to save up for all those festive treats, what can you do to minimise the damage to your financial wellbeing? Christmas shopping on a budget can certainly help. There are some simple, last minute tips you can use to stop you overspending and begin 2019 without a financial hangover.

Stick To A Gift List

There’s a good reason Santa keeps a list – and so should you! But yours isn’t to do with who is naughty and nice (yep, that annoying younger brother still has to be on it!), but rather to make sure you don’t go overboard buying a gift for your cousin’s niece’s pet dog. It’s a good idea to write a small list and stick to it. You could also consider doing something like making Christmas cookies to give to people who aren’t close family or friends, so you don’t have to buy small value token gifts. Most people have far too much stuff already as it is, so if a present hasn’t got real thought and meaning behind it, it’s best to consider whether you should really be giving it to that person.

Stick To Your Limits

If you haven’t been saving up to cover the cost of Christmas, you are going to need to set a pretty hard spending limit for yourself to make sure you don’t topple into debt. Take a look at your monthly budget and consider the amount that you can afford to set aside to cover your Christmas spending. Also think about what you plan to spend on each person’s gift and why. Do you really need to spend that much? The answer is usually no. The best approach is to figure out the total amount you have spare for gifts and divide it up between everyone that you need to buy for. So it might be £100 on your partner and £50 on your parents and so on. Then only look at gifts within that budget range. There’s no point spotting the perfect thing for them only to find it’s double the amount you’ve set aside. Online shopping makes it easy to set price filters for what you see when you’re browsing, so you don’t get distracted.

Trim Your Bills

It’s a good idea to think about what spending you can reduce in December, both for the short and long term. Go through your November bank statement and identify where you are overspending. Cancel those expensive subscriptions, and perhaps put yourself on a takeaway coffee ban for the month. You should also check you are on the best phone plan so you aren’t getting charged too much for data – check out a network like SMARTY mobile powered by Three for simple, affordable deals.

But if SMARTY isn’t your cup of tea, you can check out Half Cooked which does detailed reviews and comparisons on all UK networks to help you find the perfect network for you.

Also, try to stay in for the next few weekends and save the social whirl for all those Christmas parties and drinks. If you’re a makeup addict, try to shop your stash rather than buying anything new until the New Year.

Do Your Shopping Solo

If you shop with friends, it’s much easier to get carried away with the festive spirit and overspend. If your pals have poor money habits themselves, they are likely to encourage you to stick purchases on your credit card or overpay for items. It’s very easy for other people to spend your money! So take your shopping trip solo and you won’t risk getting distracted from the spending plan you’ve created.

Make a Wishlist Pact

If you always end up overspending by quickly jumping on Amazon Prime whenever you fancy something, make a pact with your other half to add those items to your wishlist instead. That way, you aren’t tempted to splurge when you should be spending your money on Christmas gifts, plus you can shop each others lists for a gift you know they really want. After the festive season, you are likely to be able to pick up anything you didn’t get in the sales anyway! And having a month’s distance from that ‘must have’ impulse purchase of novelty unicorn slippers may just turn out to be a good thing…

Christmas Treats from Niederegger

Christmas is approaching at an alarming pace- one minute it was July and I was on a beach in The Algarve, the next my brain is being forced in to thinking about all things festive, and more so than ever this year as Bob and I are going to be hosting Christmas for the first time.

I had a burst of inspiration the other weekend and managed to get most of my shopping done, but I still need to pick up some bits for the harder to buy for folk in my life and I’ve spent rather a lot of my spare time (of which there is not a lot of) browsing for ideas.
Luckily, by nature of being a blogger I also get alerted to great gift ideas, such as this gorgeously festive hamper of products from the masters of marzipan, Niederegger.

Hamper c/o Niederegger via Chocolates Direct

Marzipan is one of those confectionaries that divides opinion; the marmite of the sweet world I suppose. I for one love it, especially when it comes coated in chocolate- I remember one trip to Austria where I survived solely on dark chocolate and marzipan for days!

This festive hamper of treats contains both classic Niederegger products and seasonal treats. £25 gets you:

1 x 110g classic dark chocolate covered marzipan bar (my favourite!)
1 x 100g assorted mini marzipan loaves (espresso, pistachio, pineapple and orange all coated in dark chocolate)
2 x 40g dark chocolate coated sticks- selected from 3 flavours (I got cherry and walnut, both of which I highly recommend)
1 x 125g bar of flavour of the year (which is apple strudel in case you were wondering)
1 x 100g dark chocolate covered santa (which I am not sharing with anyone)

The hamper comes gorgeously packaged making it an instant gift in the making, or ideal for leaving out for guests to pick from over the festive period- this is the intention with what is left of mine, but based on my near-constant raiding of it (little and often is the key with marzipan I find) there won’t be any left!

What festive foods have caught your eye this year, and are you a marzipan lover, or a hater?

Beauty Advent Calendars from Chemist 4 U (and discount!)

I’ve never actually had a beauty advent calendar before. I’ve been intrigued by them ever since they popped on to the scene a few years back, but I’ve never had the spare money to drop on one so have settled for chocolate each year instead (apart from last year when Bob bought me a Lego one, which was pretty much the greatest thing ever).

I was recently contacted by the team at Chemist 4 U who are stocking beauty advent calendars this year. They wanted to know if I would be interested in reviewing a couple, and of course, in the interest of research, I said yes.

I wasn’t really sure what the etiquette was on posting advent calendar reviews was- spoilers vs. no spoilers was my main concern. In the end I’ve opted for a no spoilers approach, but will share my thoughts on the contents below to help influence your decision making.

The first calendar I picked was the Morris & Co. Pamper Advent Calendar*. Chemist 4 U are selling this for £32.99 (it’s available on John Lewis for £40, just to give you an idea). This calendar contains 24 days of pampering treats which range from shower gels to bath salts, in a range of fragrances. I broke in to this calendar almost straight away as it smelt so good through the packaging! Since moving, I don’t have a bath so have passed on the bath salts and mini bath bombs the calendar contains, but the products I have tried have been lovely- although highly fragranced so approach with caution if you, or the recipient has sensitive skin.

Since Bob and I are now living together I thought it would be fun to get a his ‘n hers advent calendar which we could open together. The Ladies Fragrance Advent Calendar* and Men’s Fragrance Advent Calendar* cost a respectable £14.99 each, with an RRP of £49.99 each. Whilst you won’t find big name brands in these calendars, you still get 24 difference fragrances in perfect handbag (or pocket) sized bottles. I feel like perfume is a very personal thing so this isn’t going to bit a hit with everyone and some of the scents weren’t to our taste, but we found some hidden gems and the combined haul will keep us going, probably until next Christmas rocks around!

To celebrate this year’s stock of Advent Calendars the guys at Chemist 4 U are offering 20% off all calendar purchases. Simply add the code ADVENT20 when you check out and get even more of a bargain!

What’s the best advent calendar you’ve ever had?

Winter Wonderland with Essence Cosmetics

It’s the season to sparkle! And whilst this post might be a bit late in the day for Christmas party inspiration, there’s still NYE to come, and what better excuse to up your makeup game?

As ever, Essence have come up trumps with on trend and affordable products to really add some sparkle to your festive look.

First off, apologies for the dire lighting and the lack of swatches in these photos. I wanted to do this post before Christmas but time constraints with work, and the winter lighting meant trying to grab these at 8am, just before leaving the house!

Anyway, excuses over and on to the products…

Contour fans and highlighter addicts will LOVE the prismatic hololighter stick which gives the most amazing sheen thanks to it’s holographic pigments. This is a multi-use product and an absolute bargain at £3.50- if you only bought one thing from Essence then I think it should be this.
Another amazing shimmer product is the moonlight eyes eyeshadow in the shade Angel. I own a couple of these now and I love the subtle, build-able iridescent colour- they make a great base shade for any look.

I’ve always heaped praise on Essence eyeliners and review the metal art lip & eye liner in a previous post. For party season I’m loving the shade “steel the show”, especially paired with vibrant shock lash & brow gel mascara in “sparkle on”.

The Metal Shock eyeshadow is another product I previously reviewed (and rated) and the “moon dust” shade is a welcome addition to my growing collection. I’ve used these for every party I’ve been to this month- as a base to which I’ve pressed some loose glitter or pigment on to for maximum impact.

I’ve not had a chance to try the nail products included in the package as I’m still sporting a shellac manicure. I plan to give my nails a break in the new year so will try these products out and share the results on instagram, but if you’re impatient to see for yourself and want a fun party look then you can read more here, here and here.

If you’re looking for some last minute party makeup, or fancy some on trend and affordable updates for the new season then definitely head to your local Wilko store or to their website where you’ll find all of these products and more for under a fiver per piece.
