Review: Jamie’s Italian Bristol

Restaurant reviews are few and far between on this blog, in fact this might only be the second one I’ve done over the years. Eating out has always, up until quite recently been quite an ordeal for me thanks to so many years spent living with an eating disorder but now I’m moving steadily away from that fear there was no better time to receive an e-mailing asking if Ben and I would like to pop along to Jamie’s Italian Bristol to sample what’s on offer.
I’ve been to a Jamie’s Italian just once before (to the one in Bath) and really enjoyed it but wasn’t very adventurous in my choices. This time I decided to push myself a little bit harder and really embrace the moment. The restaurant is located on the top of Park Street in Bristol, if travelling by foot there really is no better way to work up an appetite than a trek up that hill! We arrived at 7pm to a warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere and were seated on the second floor in a little booth near the window. The place has a warehouse/rustic vibe going on which we both really liked. The waiting staff were lovely and came over to explain the specials on offer that day and generally answer any questions we may have had whilst managing to not be too in our faces with constant interruptions.
After pursuing the menu and weighing up the options we both decided that we’d go for a starter and a main and then perhaps split a dessert (which as it happens we were simply too stuffed to do!). Although the menu doesn’t have the most extensive choice in the world the things is does offer all sounded pretty unique compared to standard Italian restaurant fare and it took us quite a while to decide!
I opted for the crab and avocado bruschetta which combined fresh crab with crunch fennel, smashed avocado with yogurt and chilli and was pretty delicious! The flavours worked really well together and the fennel added that little something extra. Ben went for the baked chestnut mushrooms which came with the curiously named “crispy music bread” which turn out to be a crispy sort of flat bread hosting the mushrooms and smoked mozzarella. As someone who always orders mushrooms if they are on a menu he was really impressed with these.
Last time I visited Jamie’s Italian I ordered just a small portion of pasta which whilst delicious (with black spaghetti and assorted sea foods) was very much a safe choice for me. This time I decided to throw caution to the wind and went for the chicken cacciatore- a piece of grilled free range chicken, a tomato sauce with black olives and vegetables served on garlic ciabatta with rocket and parmesan cheese to finish it off. This was incredible, perhaps one of my favourite meals over the last couple of years. Full of flavour with perfectly cooked chicken and tender vegetables I’m already trying to work out how to recreate this at home. Ben ordered a dish from the specials menu- a seafood linguine with a lemon butter sauce, various white fish chunks, massive prawns plus clams and mussels (which he asked to be omitted and this was not a problem at all). This looked really good, although the menu didn’t state it’d have whole tomatoes in which he really dislikes but those were picked out no problem. Ben says he really enjoyed this but he did wish there were some slightly simpler menu options available as well as he did find the menu a little bit fussy for his palate.
After demolishing that lot we were too full for dessert but the menu did look tempting with some pretty unique offerings. There are also a huge array of wines, cocktails and coffees available although as we’re quite boring we just stuck with a diet coke each!

Overall we really enjoyed our visit to Jamie’s Italian and I’m certainly looking forward to trying more dishes in the future. Let me know if you’ve been to one before and what else you’d recommend from the menu.

P.s. apologies for the iPhone images- I’m no good at lugging my camera around! Whilst we were guests of Jamie’s Italian for the evening all thoughts and opinions are honest and genuine.

You may remember the skirt in this post from a few months ago when I teamed up with Yumi to show off some of their fabulous Winter collection. I mentioned back then that although part of a co-ord set it was also an incredible item to pair with a plain item to add a bit of pizazz when all over print is just too much. I might not have a fancy background (thanks weather) but I still thought I’d show how I’ve been styling it in the time since my last post.

Roll Neck c/o Long Tall Sally | Skirt c/o Yumi | Boots: Stylist Pick

I think this is the perfect outfit for a weekend where I do feel like venturing outside in to the public eye. It hasn’t happened an awful lot lately thanks to the wind, rain and storms we’ve been having but never say never- it’s got to brighten up sometime right?

As I’ve been writing this post I’ve taken a look at the latest arrivals on the Yumi website, I can already feel a MASSIVE wish list forming- how gorgeous is this coral reef skirt?

How else would you style this skirt? I’m thinking of working out a look for an evening out next (you know, for when I do decide I can hack a social life!)

Review: iCig from electronic cigarette

I know what you’re thinking…another post where Laura tries an aid to stop her smoking and another failed attempt. Well, you’d be right if I’m honest. I am still smoking (and trust me, I am very ashamed of that) but I have cut down to the point where I am smoking less than I ever have done since I first made the mistake of starting and it is largely in part to the latest device I’ve been testing out- the iCig from electronic cigarette (c/o).
Apoligies, but an e-cigarette is never going to be the prettiest thing to post. However this done win bonus points for the best looking one I’ve tried. What I especially liked is that everything is contained in a handy box, that and the fact it came with a variety of flavours to try so you can get a feel for what is going to suit you best.

The starter kit claims to be quick and easy to get going with and really it is, it couldn’t be any easier. Each refill is the equivalent of 20 cigarettes so it also works out much cheaper than smoking the real thing (and I don’t know how harmless/harmful these are but they have to be safer than a traditional cigarette, right?).

I might not have completely quit yet but I am already feeling the benefits of smoking less, and since I’ve had this kit since way before Christmas (yes, I am horrendously tardy with this post) I’ve found myself barely reaching for this either…I quite simply don’t want to smoke in any shape or form any more and I am hoping beyond hope that the next time I write a post about the filthy habit it’s one to say I’ve done it!

Motorparks guide to buying a car*

My driving history is a bumpy ride if ever there was one. I first started lessons for my 17th birthday and sat (and obviously failed) five tests before deciding I perhaps wasn’t quite ready to be on the road just yet and took an extended break. Fast forward a decade and I finally decided the time was right, I was older and wiser- not to mention calmer and it wasn’t my driving that let me down, it was nerves every time and I thought I had a handle on it. Almost another year passed and a re-sat my theory test, took plenty of lessons with an excellent instructor and then went and failed two more tests, had a bit of a meltdown and have barely been behind the wheel since. Now I’ve moved out I’m in need of driving more than ever and I’m getting myself set for a third (and final) round of lessons and a test which also means that at some point in the near future I’m going to need to buy a car. I’m not the most machine headed girl and pretty clueless when it comes to cars, so buying one is going to be quite a challenge. I was recently sent this infographic from Motorparks which I’ve genuinely found really helpful for tips and advice. All I need to do now is get myself fit and well enough to get back behind the wheel and face those fears one last time.
I’m pretty sure I’m not going to have the budget for a brand new car so I found it really helpful to find a guide for buying second hand too.

I’d love to know your thoughts on driving lessons, tests and car shopping as well as your experiences- have a car you love? Let me know below, I literally have no idea where to start with my choice.

The January (2016) Degustabox

Welcome to my second Degustabox review of 2016! Not too far removed from the previous box this also contained some healthier bits and bobs, perfect for anyone still on the healthy eating wagon (which I can quite firmly confirm I am no longer). It was still a very appealing box to me though, with some old favourites and new discoveries combined.
The loot! I didn’t know where to start…
Jordan’s country crisp holds quite sentimental memories for me and is also my achilles heel when it comes to cereal. Once I have a box in my possession it’s never going to last more than a couple of days so my eyes lit up when I saw this box- sadly though I realised it’s a fruit and nut mix which I can’t eat. Ben’s been enjoying this though and now I’ve remembered how much I love this I’m going to have to buy myself a box asap (the raisin variety is my favourite!). Carob fruit syrup (by Clarks) is a new one on me and I’m not yet sure where I stand on it. I didn’t like it added to a cup of tea but I am going to try baking with it and will report back on the results.
I’m not a fan of fruit juices as a rule but every so often I really fancy apple juice icy cold from the fridge. This little bottle by Coldpress is made with golden delicious apples and contains more nutrients and Vitamin C than traditional juices thanks to it’s cold pressed nature. This is really a lovely juice and one I can see myself buying again in the future- I don’t mind paying a bit more for juices when I have them so infrequently. The Rose Lemonade by Fentimans is a bit of an “in thing” on instagram and with bloggers I suspect because it just looks so damn pretty. I wish I could say it tastes as good as it looks but my palette just didn’t get on with it at all. Clearly I do not have trendy tastebuds.
I’m always on the look out for healthy snacks, especially things I haven’t tried before. I really rate these Fit Fit Bars made from fruit and nuts. Perfect for stashing in your handbag for snacking on the go and really very tasty. I loved the apricot one! Raw chocolate (by Conscious Chocolate) has been on my to try list for ages. Raw, organic, vegan and smooth- it sounds like it shouldn’t work but really it does. The Plain Jane bar was very much enjoyed by me.
I’ve been cooking a lot more since moving so I was excited to try out the sauces from Amoy. Asian food is a favourite of mine (second to Italian) and the Malaysian Laska was delicious! I’ve made my stance on Slim Noodles quite clear in the past so I won’t dwell on these, I do think they are a good idea for some people though, they certainly have a place on the shop shelves.
I’ve raved about Yushoi’s snapea snacks before on the blog and I’m still loving them. I actually buy these regularly from Tesco and struggle to eke them out over more than two days. They might look a little odd, with a green tinge but they are really very tasty and quite filling too so good for a mid-afternoon munch. Finn Crisp are also a brand I am firmly fond of and their original crisp breads are especially good topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon, yum!
If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £6 off of your first box by entering the code 5M2R7P at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand one and off over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.
