An ode to flip flops

One of my favorite things about summer is spending as much time as possible in flip flops. If I had my way I’d be bare footed at all times, but clearly that’s not a viable option so I opt for the next best thing.

My most favorite pair of flip flops came to a tragic end in Spain. I bravely decided to go and paddle in the sea in Torremolinos and left my pink beauties innocently on the shore. Next thing I know I’ve been knocked flat by a wave taller than me and my flip flops had been dragged far, far away from my feet.
They were hastily replaced by a cheap imitation from a nearby beach shop (thanks Ellie!) as bare foot in 36 degree heat burns. That pair just about lasted the remaining ten days of the holiday but were binned before we hit the airport so now I’m left looking for the perfect replacement.

One brand that has quickly captured my heart is Reef. They have been on my radar silently in the background since my surfer-chic teenage days. Days where anything above a fiver was too expensive for footwear. Now I’m in a better position and want to treat my feet to something a bit more special, especially as flip flops are oddly supportive of a fractured foot.

I love the sturdy but bohemian nature of the Gypsyfree sandal(above). They look really comfortable and a more grown up version to my favored foam soles although perhaps not as versatile as to where I could wear them.

A more versatile option would be the Reef Playa Dreams(above). The sole remains more in keeping with the traditional flip flop whilst the thong part updates the shoe and gives it a slightly dressier edge.

Of course indecision reigns supreme here and I’m torn between replacing my lost at sea pair with something of the same style or opting for something a bit different and a bit less traditional. Part of me feels flip flops should be kept as such and therefore a foam based style would be what I go for, but where I live I’m hardly going to be trekking over beaches, paddling in the sea or slipping them on after surfing. The worst they’d encounter is some slightly muddy grass after a downpour and that has me thinking that maybe investing in leather might be worth it.

Where do you stand on flip flops? Are you a traditionalist or do you like to branch out? Got any amusing flip flop fails to share with me?

  1. These are really cute 🙂 another great flip flop brand is Gandys. I love the “orphans for orphans” story behind it! Have you checked those out?
    Keep in touch 🙂

  2. It’s so annoying when you have to chuck away your favourite pair of shoes! I have some small block heeled sandals from River Island that definitely need throwing away now but I can’t bear to part with them and can’t find the perfect replacement!!
