Fairtrade Nuts for the Festive Season

There’s a rule in our house; no Christmas food until after Bob’s birthday on the 21st of November. It’s a hard one for me to stick to as I love snacking on festive themed treats, but now the day has safely passed we’re going at it full pelt.

First on our list were these Fairtrade Chocolate Caramelised Cashews with Cranberries* created by Liberation Foods for Tesco Finest.

Liberation Foods are the UK’s only farmer-owned nut company, and this product will bring extra income to farmers and their communities in countries such as Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Costa Rica.

Made up of two types of cashews: caramelised and coated in dark chocolate, and roasted and coated with creamy white chocolate, this is a super indulgent treat, paired perfectly with sharp and zingy cranberries for the ultimate festive treat.

These are a lovely looking product, perfect for popping out when hosting guests over the festive season or putting in to a hamper. It’s worth noting that packaging is also recyclable, boosting the products eco and fair-trade credentials.
Available in Tesco stores across the country, and online for £4.00, both Bob and I highly recommend these – what a way to see in the start of the season of snacking!

The January “Recovery” box from Degustabox*

The trials and tribulations of blogging with a box obsessed cat around! Pablo couldn’t resist getting in on the first Degustabox* of 2019 action- which you’ll note brings a rather slick new look along with a whole host of brilliant products, mostly focused around recovery from the indulgence of the festive break (which now feels so very long ago!) This is probably one of my favourite boxes to date, I’ve discovered some great new snacks and there was only one item that I haven’t braved trying, read on for my thoughts.
Bob and I love Japanese food and were excited to try out Miso Tasty’s original Ramen Noodle kit (£3.50). It comes with everything you need to create a light and tasty meal- just add your topping/s of choice- in our case it was chicken and mushrooms.
It’s the worst kept secret that I’m big in to my savoury snacks and I’ve been munching on pea based snacks for a couple of years now. Pipers have just launched their own version- Crispeas, and whilst being ignorant to what Matar Paneer was (and to be honest, I still am) I can confirm that these are utterly delicious, I’m already craving another bag and am hoping they hit my local shops soon (RRP £1).
After some tentative experimentation it seems I can eat small amounts of peanut and peanut butter again without provoking a reaction so I was a bit excited to see this product from PBfit in the January box. Powdered peanut butter might sound grim, but it’s ok – it’ll never beat the real thing but it does contain 90% less fat and around 1/3 of the calories and can be used in smoothies, baking or as a toast topper amongst other things. The sachets are exclusive to the USA but you can pick up tubs in many supermarkets.
Yes! Fruit and nut bars have appeared in Degustabox before, back when I was avoiding nuts. I was glad to see them again and give them a try. I wasn’t sold on the lemon and chilli fruit bar, but both of the nut ones are pretty good- the dark chocolate and almond one especially so. I haven’t seen these for sale local to me yet, but I know many major supermarkets sell them for around £1.20 each (or in multi-packs.)
I found these LioBites exceptionally sweet, even for me, but still kind of delicious. I’m on the fence with fruit crisps these days having gone through a phase of loving them, but these are pretty good and pack a hefty flavour punch. They also count as one of your five a day, but do cost around £1.50 a bag.
Bob instantly jumped on these Pick Up bars from Bahlsen. Delicious biscuits play host to a thick slab of chocolate- not in the spirit of a January detox but we all need treats in life! We both love these and the fact they are individually wrapped makes them perfect for taking to work, or out and about with us. RRP £1.69 – keep an eye out for the other varieties too.
No prizes for anyone who guessed this was the product I didn’t brave trying! Willy’s apple cider vinegar will provide you with a daily dose of probiotics, if you can stomach it. I can’t, but I know many people who swear by it. RRP of £3.50
I’ve loved rice cakes ever since my nan introduced me to them when I was about 10- smothered in chocolate spread, of course. I’ve finally got in to the habit of taking lunch to work with me every day and I like to take some kind of cracker to pad out my salad or dip in to my soup. Both of these hit the spot nicely, the protein lentil cakes are a great addition to the Kallo snacking range and I’ll be picking them up on a regular basis.
I have a long and complicated history with sugar free jellies, but I’m finally able to face them again after a very long hiatus. These dessert inspired ones from Hartley’s are a nice addition to the range, although I didn’t find the texture as jelly like as their standard flavours. At 10 calories or less these are ideal for anyone on a January diet- or who, like me, just likes an extra sweet hit during the day on top of their usual boat load of food!
Last but by no means least we have a new(ish) product from Ryvita- protein red quinoa and sesame crips breads. Baked with pea protein and rye- so also packing in some serious fibre, these come in hand snack packs which make a great packed lunch with a mini tub of hummus and some crudites. I also enjoy snacking on these with some cream cheese and marmite because that’s how I roll.
Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you thought in the comments.

If you’re new to Degustabox, it’s a monthly food subscription box that gives you the chance to try new and exciting products on the market whilst providing amazing value for money.
On a month by month basis the box costs £12.99 (with a discount for longer subscriptions) but the contents are generally worth far more than this as you can see if you do the maths.
If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £5.00 off of your first box (making it just £7.99!) by entering the code 6HZJ8 at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand regularly over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

Christmas Treats from Niederegger

Christmas is approaching at an alarming pace- one minute it was July and I was on a beach in The Algarve, the next my brain is being forced in to thinking about all things festive, and more so than ever this year as Bob and I are going to be hosting Christmas for the first time.

I had a burst of inspiration the other weekend and managed to get most of my shopping done, but I still need to pick up some bits for the harder to buy for folk in my life and I’ve spent rather a lot of my spare time (of which there is not a lot of) browsing for ideas.
Luckily, by nature of being a blogger I also get alerted to great gift ideas, such as this gorgeously festive hamper of products from the masters of marzipan, Niederegger.

Hamper c/o Niederegger via Chocolates Direct

Marzipan is one of those confectionaries that divides opinion; the marmite of the sweet world I suppose. I for one love it, especially when it comes coated in chocolate- I remember one trip to Austria where I survived solely on dark chocolate and marzipan for days!

This festive hamper of treats contains both classic Niederegger products and seasonal treats. £25 gets you:

1 x 110g classic dark chocolate covered marzipan bar (my favourite!)
1 x 100g assorted mini marzipan loaves (espresso, pistachio, pineapple and orange all coated in dark chocolate)
2 x 40g dark chocolate coated sticks- selected from 3 flavours (I got cherry and walnut, both of which I highly recommend)
1 x 125g bar of flavour of the year (which is apple strudel in case you were wondering)
1 x 100g dark chocolate covered santa (which I am not sharing with anyone)

The hamper comes gorgeously packaged making it an instant gift in the making, or ideal for leaving out for guests to pick from over the festive period- this is the intention with what is left of mine, but based on my near-constant raiding of it (little and often is the key with marzipan I find) there won’t be any left!

What festive foods have caught your eye this year, and are you a marzipan lover, or a hater?

The June Degustabox*

The June 2018 Degustabox* and it’s arrival was swiftly followed by another exciting delivery in the form of some actual, summer weather here in the UK.
Ok so the novelty of the heatwave may have started to wear off now, but this month’s box was packed full of treats to help make any outdoor dining exciting. As ever I’ve done my best to try everything included in the box, but as also as ever there are a few products that I haven’t quite got round to yet.
I passed these biscotti from Great British Biscotti Co on to my Grandad for his expert opinion as I can’t eat them. He gave them a rave review, and they certainly look delicious. Made with only the finest ingredients and available in 20 different flavours, this particular variety left us with high hopes for more greatness from the brand which is soon to be available on Ocado and Amazon.
I’m addicted to Mighty Fine honeycomb and usually grab myself a sharing bag when I’m in Waitrose. These single portion bars are a welcome addition to the range and I highly recommend the Salted Caramel flavour. I’m not usually a Salted Caramel girl, but for this I make exception. You can find these in Sainsbury’s Local stores nationwide. Think next level Crunchie.
The product of the month this month was Capsicana cook sauces which I confess I haven’t tried yet. I haven’t been at home much to cook but I cannot wait to rustle up some fajitas with these- particularly the chilli and lime variety. I’ve used this brand’s products before and they really pack a powerful flavour punch so I have high expectations for these.
I had intended to save these Brioche Pasquier pains au lait for a savoury hotdog (veggie dog) filling, but as is prone to happen I got distracted by the bright and bold packaging and lure of a sweet and easy snack and munched them as are. It’s a bit cliche these days but I love brioche paired with savoury flavours so I am planning to repurchase soon for a BBQ feast. Having refused BBQ food for the best part of 16 years, this year I can’t get enough!
I’ve been eyeing up these Peckish BBQ rice crackers (and other varieties) in Sainsburys for a while now but never got round to buying them, therefore I couldn’t wait to try these. Light and crispy, with a good strong BBQ flavour these are baked rather than fried, gluten free and under 100 calories per portion. I’m looking forward to trying more from the brand.
I’ve long been an advocate of the Frylight brand as I still have a phobia of actual oil. The Avocado oil variety can withstand higher temperatures than other types making it ideal for stir-fries (although Bob and I mostly use it in our toastie maker)
Another product I haven’t got around to yet is this Idahoan Gratin Bake. It sounds delicious though, and is a quick and fuss free way to whip up a BBQ side dish. Assuming it’s as tasty as it sounds then this is a genius idea and I will report back once I’ve had a go.
As you can see, there was quite a selection of drinks in the June box- I skipped straight over the Fyre fruit drinks I’m sorry to say. I’m not a fan of anything but fruit in my drinks and the idea of added spice left me feeling a bit squeamish. As a concept though I think they are great, if you have tried these I’d love to know what you thought.

The Raspberry Roller cider from Rosie’s Pig when to my Dad who enjoyed it chilled, as an easy drink at the end of a long and hot day. At £2.00 a can it seems reasonably priced and looks and feels more premium than many flavoured ciders on the market.

There’s not much one can say about Orangina that hasn’t already been said. Unless you’ve lived under a rock you’ll be aware of the brand. That being said, Bob and I still very much enjoyed these bottles straight from the fridge after a very hot day. It’s a classic for a reason.

Finally we have no&more rapsberry & blueberry water. I’m trying to up my water intake but it has to be flavoured so finding one that tastes decent, with no added sugar or anything artificial is always a priority. I liked this and would definitely buy it if I saw it in a shop near me. It also comes in Tangerine & Mango which I’m 100% seeking out as well as a couple of other flavours.

Degustabox- May 2018*

Yep, it’s already that time of the month! It’s time to get yourself comfortable and get ready for some serious stomach rumbling as you make your way through my latest Degustabox* review. The May 2018 box was world cup themed- now I’m not a football fan, in fact I was only vaguely aware that it was world cup year! However, I can see how a lot of the products in this month’s box would appeal to those gathering round to support their favourite team…let’s dive in!
There was a kitten sized mishap with the May product of the month, hence the mug shot of Pablo, the destroyer of anything. He managed to break in to the packet of mini coconut and black pepper soft tortillas- we left them un-attended for all of five minutes and came back to find them ripped open and mostly devoured. Given the speed in which he munched them I’d say they were a hit, but it did mean my plans of making some wraps using the Caribbean creamy chicken curry mix (both from Santa Maria Latin American Kitchen) had to be put on a back burner until I can find these wraps in the shops. Cheers Pablo! The sauce mix costs £1.00 and the tortillas £1.50
Long term readers will know by now that I won’t have tried the reduced sugar drink from Say Aloe- I’m sure it’s very nice if you like that kind of thing, but I can’t bring myself to try it and will pass this on to someone braver than I. The lemonade from We Made was delicious though, really delicious. It’s rare I enjoy a soft drink that isn’t diet coke or pepsi max but if I saw this in the shops on a hot day I’d 100% grab it.
Lucozade was a fitting addition to a sport themed box, and I am sure most people are familiar with this old school classic- my old faithful hangover cure in my drinking days! Aloe drink £1.49, Lemonade £1.50, Lucozade £1.10.
These Ciders from The Good Cider would be perfect for post match celebration, or commiseration. Despite my west-country origins I am not a cider drinker but these went down exceptionally well with my father.
KitKats are my all time favourite chocolate bar, you can’t beat the original but these white chocolate bites come close! These are the ideal size for sharing, although they taste so good I can’t help but feel they won’t last long enough to be shared around. RRP is £1.59 but you’ll often find them on offer for £1.
(On an aside to this, who has tried the Ruby KitKat yet? So fragrant but pretty tasty!)
Another product from KitKat and another one I really, really don’t want to share! The return of KitKat senses was good news to many, and I’ve been looking for these locally with no success. Individually wrapped and in three flavours- double chocolate, hazelnut and salted caramel these are really very good- although I’d like to see a more imaginative flavour selection from nestle in the future, there’s so much potential! £3.99 per sharing box.
Brioche Pasquier products remind me of my school days, I often had one of their filled brioche rolls in my lunch box and the taste, unchanged for years, transports me right back. These are brilliant little snacks for picnics, car journeys, day trips, breakfast on the go…individually wrapped and small enough to not be too naughty I’m steadily working my way through both varieties right now. At £1.39 for a pack of 4 they are a pretty good value snack as well.
