reflect and look ahead

The last work outfit of 2011; New Look skirt, Primark jumper and Bertie shoes c/o Sarenza.
It’s crazy to think that this time last year I hadn’t even started working. When I started my job I didn’t expect to fall in love with it as much as I have, and I never imagined that I could have progressed so much. 2012 looks to be a promising year work wise and I couldn’t be more excited, or grateful.

On the whole 2011 has been one of my better years; nothing could quite top the nightmare that was 2010. Things aren’t quite where I want them to be, I have ground to catch up on in my recovery and things to be worked upon in general; but isn’t that the point in life? To look back and progress. If it were perfect straight off the bat, what would we have to do, except merely exist?

I spent so long hoping for the perfect life, it wasn’t until I stopped striving for the perfection and realised that no one else held the same expectations of me that I held for myself that things fell in the place. I was suddenly able to relax, meet new people without second guessing every move and allow myself to just go with the flow.
Lesson learnt.
We are our own worst critics. In 2012 I vow to take deep breaths and just have fun.

My tools for the new year? Well, my filofax to keep me organised and make sure I turn up to where I need to be, and my well being journal from paperchase; with sections for all areas of life, I’m hoping I can use this as a positive tool for taking care of me.

What have you learnt this year?
What are your new year essentials?

If your out partying tonight, HAVE FUN! If like me, you are planning on a night in (with a high chance of being asleep before midnight) then…enjoy that too!

  2. Have a great start into the new year!

  3. What wonderful post. You certainly seemed to have blossomed in 2011 and look more radiant entering into 2012 with your new goals. Thank you for allowing us all to join you on your journey. x

I have learnt that the key to my happiness is not having all the world on my shoulders! But to share responsibilities with the people I love and rely on.

As for my new year essentials, well as corny as it may sound it’s my family (to keep me sane as well as drive me crazy!), a little like you my filofax (I would never know what I should be doing with out it!) and my blog.

Enjoy your night in with your family, no one better to see the new year in with in my humble opinion!

Wishing you every happiness in 2012.

    X x

  4. I’m really happy that 2011 was much better for you! x

  5. You’ve come so far and done so well and so much this year! I hope you are proud of yourself and starting 2012 with a smile on your face, enjoying the new year and all lessons learnt.

I’ve gained a lot in self confidence over the year of 2011 and I hope to continue with that in 2012. What I rely on for the new year is my filofax, my family, my own capability of doing what’s right for me and our new home that’s everything I’ve wished for and even more.

Like you, I’m planning on staying home this evening, enjoying time with my little family and hopefully enjoying piece and quiet.

  13. I’m also a perfectionist and I find it very hard to deal with when I am dissappointed or let myself down. I think I have come to realise that being healthy is no. 1 priority and everything else is just a bonus. I’m still highly competitive and intense, but not so much as i used to be. I just want to say thank you for supporting my blog this year, I have enjoyed reading yours and I am so pleased that 2011 has been a better year than 2010. All the best for 2012! x

  18. I’ve learnt to treasure everyone as who they are and how they are because we might not have eachother forever πŸ™‚

Also, LOVE your shoes! (I will continue saying this each post they’re featured :P) xx

  20. you’ve come a long way and have grown so much! you have so much to be proud of and thankful for and it’s great to see you able to recognize that ; )

i love when you said “I spent so long hoping for the perfect life, it wasn’t until I stopped striving for the perfection and realised that no one else held the same expectations of me that I held for myself that things fell in the place. I was suddenly able to relax, meet new people without second guessing every move and allow myself to just go with the flow.” because it’s sooooo true!!!

    Happy new years!!!! <3

  21. I have learned the same kind of lessons… that it was me who pushed myself to be perfect, read skinnier than skinny. And that happiness isn’t on that road, death is. I am learning to eat normally again. Not always easy but I am progressing. All that know me say so too. So I am a tiny bit proud. Just like I am proud of you Laura!!!!!

Love ya – best New Year!

    Susa

  22. Hope you have an amazing 2012! Love the idea of having the wellbeing journal πŸ™‚

  25. Fab shoes! Happy New Year! xo

  26. I love your shoes and the color of your skirt! How lovely.

  27. I have learnt that work life balance and spending time with the ones I love is more important than making money. I have learnt to relax a bit more, even if that means I have to spend less.

  28. Happy New Year Laura.

Things I have learned in 2011:

People can be just as fantastically lovely as they can be horribly viscous.

Sometimes you just have to throw yourself in at the deep end and see what happens.

If you never try, you’ll never know, and it is better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all.

And most importantly, I learned in 2011, that we really can do anything we put our minds to.

I can’t wait to see what you achieve in 2012, and thank you for your support, friendship and lovely comments of 2011.

  29. Good luck for 2012 πŸ™‚ ! I really adore those fab green shoes !

  30. How can people compliment her on these shoes?? They are such high heels! I would NEVER wear shoes like that!!!
