park life

Dress: Matalan (here) | Boots: Shoe Zone | Coat: Zara
The weather last Sunday was gorgeous, just gorgeous. Ben and I took the opportunity to take my camera for a walk around St George Park and practice my promise of getting more outdoors outfit shots. He’s pretty good behind the camera right? We need to have a proper play around with my camera and it’s focus settings- until I achieve my dream of being able to afford a decent DSLR we’re making do with my decent but not quite there bridge camera.
I really want to do this more often, it was nice not to be confined to where I can park my tripod or balance the camera and I actually felt pretty relaxed. We had a good walk too, I want more days like this so I can really stretch my legs. Walking is pretty much the only exercise I’ve been able to do since my back first went in October so I’m trying to get in as much as possible pre-op. Post op there will be no stopping me and I can’t wait to get on my bike again.
I really like these photos actually, which is quite rare for me to say about pictures of myself. For once I’m not sat analysing what my body looks like or how I could do with wearing more makeup or standing at a more flattering angle, I’m just enjoying the pictures as a whole and thinking back on the laugh we had taking them.
This dress is my favourite clothing purchase of the year so far. A mere £12 from Matalan and so swishy and fun. Obviously I’m attracted to any item of clothing with a Daisy on and once I’m off my shopping ban I expect a few more will join it. I’m also a swing dress convert, I thought they’d do nothing for me but actually I really enjoy the draped and twirly affect.
These boots are becoming worn out with the amount I have worn them recently. As much as I love them I can’t wait to be back in one of my many pairs of heeled ankle boots.
The coat was a Christmas present from my parents and is perhaps the warmest thing I own. Good old Zara.
I’m so ready for this weekend, the weeks in January always seem to drag on and on. It’s going to be a family orientated affair this weekend for the most part. It’s my beloved Grandad’s birthday today and I can’t wait to see his face when he sees the present Ben and I have got him when I meet him for coffee in my lunch break.
For those of you who don’t have a DSLR/SLR camera, how do you get the best from your outfit photos? Any hints and tips are welcome.

  1. Great to see you getting some outdoors outfit pictures! I am still trying to get to grips with how to get the kind of pictures I want (a course would be good) x

  2. That is a really nice dress, there. I love it combined with the boots, they give strength to the look.

  3. Oh what a lovely dress! It must be strange not being in front a tripod. Zara do thee most amazing coats. I keep checking out their sale and uming and ahing whether to buy one. This cold whether doesn’t seem to be going anytime soon, despite the blue skies. I’m thinking of getting a DSLR too. I just don’t know whether it’s worth the splurge. There’s so many other things I could do with that amount of money. Which camera are you thinking of getting?

  4. I’m considering a DSLR. At the moment my digital camera is about seven years old and is really on it’s last legs, as when I set it to a setting, the dial doesn’t stop whizzing round on the screen, so you can’t really set it to what you want.

  5. Great photos, you should be pleased. Loving the dress.

  6. Oh hello I think I need this dress in my life because you look a bit beaut in this! x

  7. These photos are beautiful Laura! It’s so lovely to see some outdoors photos during this cold stint. I long for these kinds of days (and my boyfriend’s day off coinciding with it!) so that we can go out for walks too, I’m longing to walk through the woods, hearing the crunch beneath my feet and soaking up a little sunshine even if it is still cold. It just keeps on raining! Daisies are one of my favourite flowers, your dress is so pretty and I think the swing style is so flattering 🙂 I think you’ve already done brilliantly with the photos! It’s so hard to take a good photograph when the sun is as low as it is in the Winter, so you’ve done a great job 🙂 I hope you enjoy your granddad’s birthday celebrations, I hope you’ll share what you got him with us!! 🙂 xxx

Love the dress and the coat. I like the outdoor photos, I think it’s good to mix things up a bit every now and then. I need to get into the habit of carrying my digital camera around with me more often, I tend to take snaps on my phone, but they just don’t look that great on the blog… Yours are fab though!

  9. I love the photos! always like outdoors photos best. Pity I don’t have a garden anymore so I have to make do with the house. Weehh.

You don’t need a DSLR. I sometimes wish I got a smaller camera because I never really take my camera out with me due to the size! You can get some good effects in editing to get better photos. Main thing is to know where to stand in regards to the light. I wouldn’t listen to me though I just sand in front of a tripod and hope that I’m in focus, haha.

  10. The camera was invented to capture moments we want to remember, how lovely that you look at these and smile. It must be nice to have your own personal photographer, I spend most my life running back and fourth from the camera to set the timer again!
I went into Matalan for the first time in ages recently… so much nice stuff, managed not to spend too much.
Good luck with the op x

  11. My bridge has focus issues at times too, especially with landscapes it annoys the life out of me at times. Sigh. But I can never justify buying a DSLR even with me taking photographs for myself outside of having a blog!

Looks like you had fun though, although i’m guessing that blue sky is deceptive!

  12. good light is the best tool you can have. don’t have the sun right infront of you cos you will squint (face wise) and dont have it directly behind you. find the middle ground. get a good distance between you and the camera. a few close ups are good too to show detail if your camera is able to focus a bit.

find a good free editing software to balance out the colour and light. To be honest I use my iphone alot and edit in the app afterlight.

just have fun. it takes time to get your style. doesn’t always need to be perfect. xx

  13. also. walls and interesting complimentary backdrops are good. 🙂

  14. Gorgeous photos! Can totally see why you like them so much, I love them and think you look so happy and pretty. I think these look pretty fab, I don’t think you need to fork out on a DSLR to be honest. I see some blogs with photos taken with iPhones that look better than those with more expensive cameras, I think sometimes people think a DSLR is the answer to their photo woes but I honestly think that with decent lighting and a lot of playing around with the camera you have you can get equally good photos! xxx

  15. Glad you’re getting out there and trying new styles and locations. Light is a big one, you have to mess around and different times for find the perfect(well maybe that’s a push) day light.

  16. Great photographs and I love the striking print on your dress. I did a day photography course in Bath which was really good. I thi nk the best thing for photos has to be about going outdoors but other than that I turn the setting to ‘S’ mode and change the F setting to see which works best. I think putting the f setting as low as possible can work well for portraits giving a sharp focus and blurred background.

  17. I do think it’s all about the light! Having the light not in your face helps and having enough light! I hate winter blogging!! X

    Oh and daisy dress=fab!

  18. I am liking this location and your lovely dress! What a bargain buy. 🙂 Photos always look better outside!
